Why volunteering is so good for our wellbeing

A very special part of PAVS (Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services) is the Volunteer Centre.

PAVS Volunteering Development Officers, Louise and Mhairi work across Pembrokeshire, to literally bring those that wish to volunteer, together with amazing volunteering opportunities.

Last week Mhairi, Community Volunteering Development Officer, spent time at the Haverfordwest Library, where she had some great introductory conversations with prospective volunteers.

Mhairi described how volunteering has shifted a lot in recent times, with many more flexible and one-off opportunities becoming available, which can provide variety and a chance to try out new things. There are also a variety of regular volunteering opportunities available for those that may wish to have a bit more routine.

“Volunteering is a ray of light in your life and you feel like you make such a huge difference. Without volunteering, my life would be a lot emptier, quieter, and darker. I really believe that volunteering can give you a sense that you are doing something worthwhile and a real sense of achievement.”

Louise and Mhairi work closely with PAVS Community Connectors, as well as with voluntary and community organisations, to better understand what is needed.

As well as making a difference directly by volunteering, the act of volunteering is extremely good for our wellbeing. Volunteering helps to us engage with our happy hormones, boosting the release of oxytocin, which can lead to a release of serotonin and dopamine. Some call it the ‘helpers high’.

The feel-good factor that we get through making a difference for others, in turn makes a real difference to our individual happiness, boosting our morale and positively impacting other aspects of our lives.

In short volunteering makes us feel happy!

“Volunteering has been life-changing for me.”
