Meet the Team – Mia Gillies

This week, in our new weekly ‘Meet the Team’ slot, is Mia Pavs

We asked Mia a few questions about her role and what she enjoys about her job…

What is a day in the life of a Community Connector for South Pembrokeshire like?
As a connector no two days are the same. I receive referrals for individuals that are interested in finding out what is available to them in their community. I visit people in their homes or communities and have a conversation to find out all the things that are important to them, from the conversation I can then offer information on all the services, activities, groups and organisations that can assist the person to access their community and enjoy connecting. Other parts of my job include helping to set up groups, networking with other professionals, learning through training and courses, attending groups and activities to meet people in my community and keeping my socials up to date with information and activities in South Pembrokeshire.

Where is your favourite place in Pembrokeshire to visit?
This is a difficult question! My favourite beach is Broad Haven, it is my go to when I need a dose of loveliness.

Is there a group or organisation in Pembrokeshire that you’re excited about right now?
There are many groups and charities that do wonderful work in Pembrokeshire, but one that has gone from strength to strength and survived the pandemic despite being fairly new is BESPOKE individuals, https://www.facebook.com/groups/bespokeindividuals

A mobility awareness group based in Pembroke. They have continued to provide support and information to their members and the wider community when access and mobility have become a barrier to getting around.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?
In my spare time I make jewellery and macrame things, all my friends and family get them at Christmas and birthdays!

What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is seeing a person continue with a new group or activity and start to forge new friendships. Being a part of ending loneliness for someone is very special.

Fun fact about you?
I once hitchhiked through Israel and swam (bobbed) in the dead sea.
