Safeguarding Training

Group A

Group A Safeguarding training is a National Standard available as a free online course developed by Social Care Wales. It is recommended that all staff and volunteers who work in the public and  voluntary sector complete this training. It is also suitable for those in private sector settings.

This session highlights:

  • how to work in ways that safeguard people from abuse, harm and neglect.
  • The factors, situations and actions that could lead or contribute to abuse, harm or neglect.
  • How to report, respond and record concerns or allegations related to safeguarding.

PAVS is pleased to offer ‘Social Care Wales – Group B Training, Learning & Development Standards. The training is aimed at staff and volunteers who have any contact with children, young people and/or their parents/carers or adults at risk and/or their carers.

Competence at this level is about individuals knowing what to look for, which may indicate possible harm and knowing who to contact and seek advice from if they have concerns.

​The learning outcomes of the training are as follows:

 This training will give participants the opportunity to:

  • ​Describe how to work in ways that safeguard people from abuse, harm and neglect.
  • ​Explain factors, situations and actions that could lead or contribute to abuse, harm or neglect.
  • ​Consider legislation, national policies, codes of conduct and professional practice in relation to safeguarding.
  • ​Know how to recognise and report different types of abuse, neglect and harm.

​ Individuals are expected to:

  • ​Recognise, respond to and know how to share safeguarding concerns
  • Have basic knowledge of relevant legislation
  • Be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse, neglect and other kinds of harm
  • Be able to use the appropriate policies and procedures to effectively support safeguarding issues
  • Recognise own role and responsibilities and those of others in safeguarding children and adults at risk

PAVS has received funding from Welsh Government and is able to offer this course at a subsidised rate to groups in Pembrokeshire.

Cost of the session is as follows:

Group B training is suitable for individuals who send time with people in a group setting or on a one-to-one basis and have more responsibility for safeguarding. All participants will have to completed Group A online training.

  • The requirement to complete Group A training
  • Legislation, national policies and codes of conduct and professional practice in relation to Safeguarding.
  • How to work in ways that safeguard people from abuse, harm and neglect
  • The factors , situations and actions that could lead or contribute to abuse, harm or neglect
  • How to report, respond and record concerns or allegations related to safeguarding

Roles and Responsibilities – What every committee member needs to know!

This workshop is for new committee members and more experienced members who would like an update. It will help you feel more informed, able to be an effective trustee and support your committee.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Have a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities of committee members
  • Recognise the roles of the Chair, Secretary & Treasurer within the organisation
  • What makes an effective committee member
  • Understand the importance of the governing document
  • Understand the responsibilities associated with a legal structure
  • Be familiar with the requirements of external regulatory bodies
  • Identify potential liabilities and how to guard against them

Who Should Sign Up:

  • Those considering becoming a trustee but want to know more before they do.
  • New charity trustees who want to understand the fundamentals of being a trustee.
  • Serving charity trustees who want to update or refresh their knowledge.

Social Enterprise Network Event

We are excited that the Pembrokeshire Social Enterprise Network is back for 2025! ​This is following the launch event of the Pembrokeshire Social Enterprise Network back in June 2024, and a brilliant second event in October at Haverhub.

We met on 6th March 2025, and again on 10th July 2025. The next event is taking place on 17th September 2025.

We have been organising another event, this time it’s for the Green, Environment and Food organisations in Pembrokeshire to come together,

Social Value Engine Workshop – PAVS 2025

PAVS invites you to come along to a free Social Value Engine workshop:

9.30am – 12.00pm Green Shed (top floor) FRAME, Haverfordwest, SA61 1XF

Join us for an in-person workshop at The Green Shed Pembrokeshire FRAME in Haverfordwest. The free workshop will tell you all about the Social Value Engine and how it can benefit your organisation to demonstrate the social value of your work.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop you will have:

  • Knowledge of the benefits of Social Value
  • A basic understanding of how to record social value
  • Started to put together your social value engine report
  • Be ready to collect the data for inputting into the engine

Knowledge Hub

If you work in the voluntary sector in Wales the Knowledge Hub gives you easy access to a range of online information, networking and learning.

Knowledge Hub, provided by Third Sector Support Wales is an easy-to-use tool to help voluntary organisations upskill, learn and access high quality information on key areas such as running your organisation, volunteering, funding and influencing.

As well as a selection of information sheets and online courses, Knowledge Hub also gives you the opportunity to network with peers and have discussions on topics that are important to you. It is completely free to use for anyone working or volunteering in the voluntary sector in Wales, or for those wanting to get involved in the third sector for the first time.

DBS Overview Workshop – Friday 31st October (09:30 am – 10:30 am)

This 60 minute workshop, focusing on the Voluntary and Communities Sector, will cover:

  • The role of the Disclosure and Barring service
  • Understanding DBS Checks and role eligibility, including levels of check and workforce
  • What ‘regulated activity’ is
  • An Organisation’s duties and responsibilities in regard to referring to DBS
  • Understand the DBS barring process and the consequences of being placed on one or both Barred Lists

DBS Disclosure Workshop – Wednesday 10th December (12:00 pm – 13:30 pm)

The 90 minute workshop, focusing on the Voluntary and Communities Sector, will cover:

  • The benefits of DBS and your organisation working together
  • The different levels of DBS check
  • Eligibility, and when an employee is eligible for a check

The 90 minute workshop, focusing on the Voluntary and Communities Sector, will cover:

  • The benefits of DBS and your organisation working together

  • When a DBS barring referral should be made, including when the legal duty is met
  • The three different referral routes
  • How to make a good quality referral
  • The consequences of not making appropriate barring referrals
  • The consequences of being included on one or both Barred Lists

DBS Information Gathering Workshop – Tuesday 25nd November (13:00 pm – 14:30 pm) & Tuesday 10th February (11:00 am – 12:30 pm)

The 90 minute workshop will cover:

  • Why requests are made by DBS and what we do with that information
  • The legal duty placed on organisations to provide this information
  • The legislation that underpins these requests and allows for sharing with confidence
  • The importance of responding to requests to safeguard vulnerable groups 

DBS Update Service Workshop – Wednesday 17th December (12:00 pm – 13:30 pm) & Tuesday 24th February (10:00 am – 11:30 am)

The 90 minute workshop will cover:

  • What the Update Service is (and is not)
  • Which DBS certificates can be registered with the service
  • Benefits of the service to applicants and recruiters
  • Status checking & interpreting the results
  • Update Service and Home-Based positions
  • Using the Update Service when recruitment decisions are made off site

DBS Barring Referral Service Workshop – Friday 12th December (10:00 am – 11:00 am) & Tuesday 17th February (13:00 pm – 14:00 pm)

  • Who has a legal duty to refer
  • When a referral should be made

WCVA Training for Trustees Week

Trustees’ Week takes place from 3 – 7 November in 2025 and the WCVA is running a series of free events to mark the occasion.

Free Suicide Awareness & Training

Thanks to a grant from the Enhancing Pembrokeshire Fund, PAPYRUS , Prevention of Young Suicide is able to offer fully-funded suicide awareness and prevention training to anyone living or working in Pembrokeshire.  This will be a rolling programme of online training between June 2024 and February 2025 and will be free to anyone in Pembrokeshire. 

  • SPOT – For those looking for an overview of suicide as a subject and how to talk about it, the SPOT (Suicide Prevention Overview Training) will be available as a 90minute training session, looking at the background to suicide awareness, why it is important, what language to use when discussing suicide and particular groups that are vulnerable. 
  • SPEAK – For those looking for a more in-depth training about suicide prevention, the SPEAK (Suicide Prevention Explore Ask Keep-Safe) training will be available as a 3.5hr training session, looking at awareness of suicide, the issues behind statistics in Wales and the UK, how to ask someone with suicidal thoughts about it and the best responses and how to write a suicide-safety plan or have a discussion with someone about keeping safe.

Gryff’s Mind Space

Gryff’s Mind Space is a small but passionate charity project based in West Wales. We provide free, neurodiversity-affirming counselling and holistic support to young people aged 18–30 – who identify as neurodivergent, have experienced trauma, or are affected by suicide.

We’re currently funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and delivering a 12-month project across West Wales, with online support offered across Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, and Powys, as well as face-to-face appointments offered in some areas.

What We Offer:

  • 6 free one-to-one counselling sessions
  • Creative, mindfulness-based group sessions
  • A wellbeing retreat day for young people, families and carers
  • No referral needed from a GP or mental health service
  • Neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed practitioners
  • Quiet, welcoming spaces — and the option to access support online

We know that many young people in our region face barriers when trying to access traditional services. We want Gryff’s Mind Space to be a soft place to land — where people feel listened to, not pathologised — and where lived experience and difference are respected.

Data First Aid

Pro Bono Economics have a free volunteer matching service called Data First Aid that helps connect charities with data support needs to a data expert in their volunteer pool. The service can help support organisations with data analysis, and spreadsheet support including automation and data visualisation or short pieces of research. Charities can receive 1-5 days of support over a period of up to 5 months.

Talk Training

Talk Training, in Cardiff delivers fully funded management qualifications on behalf of the Welsh Government. Individuals who are employed for more than 16 hours a week are eligible to access this training. Office Hours

Our staff are now working in a hybrid way which means they may not be in the office, but working from other venues or home working. Due to changes in the way we now work, we are not holding meetings or running training events in person from our premises. However, if you wish to meet with a member of staff then please email them directly or call their business mobile number. The staff contact list is kept up to date with the most recent information.

If you do need to call at our premises, we are open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and 9.00am to 4.30pm on a Friday (except on Bank Holidays). Between 9am and 10am, and after 2pm, Monday to Thursday and all day Friday you may need to ring the bell (situated on the right hand side of the door). If you are just delivering mail, then please use the letter box on the front door.
