Victim Support – Hate Crime Team

                  What is a hate crime?

Hate crime is defined as a crime against someone based on a part of their identity.

There are five categories of ‘identity’ when a person is targeted because of a hostility or prejudice towards their:

                  • disability
                  • race or ethnicity
                  • religion or belief (which includes non-belief)
                  • sexual orientation
                  • transgender identity.

Victim Support also recognises crimes targeted at alternative sub-cultures (such as Goth) as a form of hate crime.

Changes to the law about regulated activity with children from 1st September 2026

From 1 September 2026, the law about regulated activity with children is changing. The current rule about the supervision of paid staff and volunteers carrying out specific activities with children will be removed from the legal definition.
This means some people will be in regulated activity with children from 1 September 2026 when they were not before, because they were sufficiently supervised by someone else. This will apply if they do the work often enough, or overnight.

Join the DBS Regional Outreach Team to find out more about this change and how it may impact on your organisation.
