Warm Welcome for Cabinet Secretary Jane Hutt

Representatives from voluntary community organisations across Pembrokeshire came together at Llanddewi Velfrey Village Hall on Tuesday 17th December to meet with the Senedd Cabinet Secretary Jane Hutt. During a rich and stimulating discussion volunteers spoke about how they provide warm spaces in their communities during the winter months.

From Dinas to Solva, Haverfordwest to Martletwy, Crymch to Llanddewi Velfrey, the minister heard how grant funding has enabled communities to use their facilities for coffee mornings, meals and a wide range of activities – so vital in the cold months.  They spoke of their impressive efforts during Storm Darragh to provide warmth, water, wifi and food to those without power. There was also reflection on the urgency of preparing for future stormy events.

PAVS Chief Executive Officer Jess Bickerton noted “We also heard about the important work being done by Pembrokeshire FRAME in tackling fuel poverty, the Carers Trust in providing support for unpaid carers, as well as PACTO and community transport enabling people to reach warm spaces.

There was much appreciation for PAVS’ role in channelling funds through the Keep Warm Keep Well initiative – which has been promoted by the Pembrokeshire Community Hub – reflecting the excellent partnership between PAVS, Pembrokeshire County Council and the Health Board.  Furthermore, the Pembrokeshire Community Buildings Forum, facilitated by PAVS, is invaluable for sharing ideas and experience.

The meeting gave the Cabinet Secretary the opportunity to see the impact of community led initiatives and how funds can be utilised to provide support for a wide range of individuals and groups across the County.

Jess reinforced this by saying “What a great testimony to our amazing community: organisations and volunteers working together to play a vital role to bring people together!  Heart-warming, in every sense! I’d also like to extend a huge vote of thanks to the team of volunteers at Llanddewi Village Hall who hosted us so beautifully – the cakes were absolutely delicious!”
