Wednesday 20th<\/sup> August 2025 saw Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services (PAVS) officially open the Community Zone at this year\u2019s Pembrokeshire County Show, celebrating the strength and vibrancy of the county\u2019s third sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the opening, PAVS CEO Jess Bickerton marked her one-year anniversary in the role, expressing gratitude to her team, trustees, and the wider community for their support. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to be back at the County Show\u2014the largest gathering in Pembrokeshire\u2014and the buzz in the Community Zone is already inspiring,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Community Zone featured 22 charities and voluntary organisations, showcasing the depth of community engagement across the county. Jess highlighted the sector\u2019s impact during recent challenges, including the response to Storm Darragh and the PATCH Toy Appeal, which revealed both the generosity of local people and the pressing needs faced by many families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her address, Jess paid particular attention to the role of volunteers reminding everyone of the recently launched Pembrokeshire Volunteering Strategy<\/a>, designed to promote and support volunteering opportunities for all ages and interests. She also announced the upcoming Annual Volunteering Awards in November<\/a>, supported by South Hook LNG, encouraging everyone to submit nominations to celebrate outstanding contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event also paid tribute to Tim Minnet, a long-serving Blood Biker who tragically lost his life while volunteering. His legacy continues to inspire new volunteers across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PAVS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the voluntary sector through funding, advice, and convening networks across areas such as community halls, youth and families, and age-friendly initiatives. The organisation also hosts the Pembrokeshire Community Hub and coordinates a team of Community Connectors who work across the county to support residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Jess acknowledged ongoing challenges including poverty, an aging population, and stretched services. However, she expressed optimism: \u201cWith creativity, compassion, and collaboration, I believe our sector will continue to make a meaningful difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Community Zone remained open throughout the County Show, offering visitors a chance to connect with local organisations and learn more about the work being done to strengthen communities across Pembrokeshire.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
