Festival ‘Buzz’ at Pembrokeshire’s First

Volunteering Fair2019

National Volunteers' Week was celebrated in style recently with a brand new event, organised by PAVS and kindly supported by South Hook LNG as part of their ongoing commitment to local community projects.  Over 30  Pembrokeshire voluntary organisations, including a wide range of exciting volunteering opportunities, hosted stands along Haverfordwest’s Riverside Shopping area.

The event attracted a footfall of nearly 500 people, all seeking information about volunteering and how they can get involved in their communities. The occasion took on a real buzz with a number of young people achieving their certificates for PAVS’ newly launch VIP (Volunteers in Pembrokeshire) reward scheme for under 25s which recognises a variety of volunteer hours achieved by groups and individuals. Certificates were also presented to a volunteer as part of the PAVS 25+V scheme which rewards volunteers aged over 25.

Caffi Man Cwrdd which is based at the Meads Leisure Centre in Milford Haven, attended on the day and provided tasty free food samples which went down a treat by everyone present. Face painting and Pembrokeshire Mind’s contemporary singing band gave a real festival atmosphere at the heart of Haverfordwest. One stand holder even brought along a range of Ukuleles which allowed visitors the opportunity to ‘have a go’ and play along. Many stands offered activities and the opportunity to try out something new and gave an opportunity to ask face to face what volunteering was available and how to get involved. Pure West Radio also joined us on the Riverside and broadcast live interviews on their radio station so a huge thank you to them for their support with helping us to promote our prestigious event.

Caroline White, PAVS’ Volunteering Officer said “we were very excited at PAVS about this new event to mark National Volunteers’ Week and really delighted by the interest shown by voluntary organisations and by the turnout on the day. It was deemed a huge success and we hope it will become an annual event. Besides valuing the generous support  given by South Hook LNG, we were very grateful for the fantastic support from the Riverside Shopping staff team to help make the day run smoothly plus to PCC for allowing us to hire the Farmers Market stall equipment at a discounted rate. We would love it to be bigger and better next year,” adding “it is a great way for people who wish to volunteer to find out about what is available all in one place. Volunteering can change people’s lives by improving their well-being, alleviating loneliness, becoming active and involved within the community. Additionally, volunteering also helps with personal development, gaining work experience for your CV, accessing training opportunities and gaining certificates and qualifications”.

Commenting on the success of the Fair, South Hook LNG’s PR Manager, Mariam Dalziel congratulated the teams involved and those who had been recognised for their volunteering activity.

“We run an active volunteering programme at South Hook LNG, encouraging our teams to work with the community and support projects that have meaning to them” she said. “We are pleased to have been able to support Pembrokeshire’s first Volunteering Fair.”
