We regularly receive information on a wide range of courses and training opportunities in Pembrokeshire and Wales wide. Whilst we can't feature them all here, we have selected some that may be of interest. Information on everything featured here is available from the Training Office in Haverfordwest.


International Day of Disabled People

Pride and Justice - Making rights a reality

On December 3 2008 the Assembly Commission in partnership with disability voluntary organisations is hosting a celebration to mark the success, ability and dignity of disabled people in Wales

2008 is a significant year for disabled people and in the international human rights movement.

•  On 3 May the United Nations entered into force the Convention on the Rights of Disabled People and its Optional Protocol. The legally binding instruments sets out the legal obligations of States to promote and protect the rights of disabled people.

•  2008 is also the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

The event will be held at the National Assembly for Wales estate at Cardiff Bay . Numbers are limited and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Breaking the Barriers through Accessible Information

A fully funded one-day training course delivered through RNIB Cymru, combining:

•  Understanding Sight Loss training

•  Training on accessible information and accessible documents

•  An Introduction to accessible ICT

There are over 2 million individuals with sight problems in the UK , and 100,000 of these individuals live in Wales. Service providers are legally obliged to make their services accessible to people with disabilities, including those people with a visual impairment. Our full day training session will help you understand the needs of blind and partially sighted people and improve the service you offer.

 

Who should attend?

The training is suitable for staff within the statutory and voluntary sector including front-line staff, managers, and particularly those staff members that are in contact with the general public.

Child Development Courses

Aberystwyth University are offering a number of courses in Child Development, two of which are being run in Haverfordwest:

Understanding Children's Behaviour 4 sessions starting 1 February 2009 10am-4pm

Courses are £50 / £40 concessions (there is also a "no fee" scheme for certain low-income students).

Volunteer Mentoring with the Princes Trust Cymru in Pembrokeshire.

The volunteer mentoring scheme forms a vital part of the support which young people can access through the Trust. It's not just the young people who get something from the scheme volunteers find their supporting role teaches them a lot too. Training and support is available for successful recruits.

The current round of recruitment the dates are as follows:

Application forms to be completed throughout July, August, and September

Interview & CRB completion dates: 20 th , 23 rd , 24 th Oct.

Training dates for 2008: 21 st , 22 nd , 23 rd November.

Training dates for 2009: 30 th , 31 st Jan & 1 st Feb.

Basic First Aid - British Red Cross

The course focuses on key life-saving skills, provides an opportunity to learn the first aid response to the most common accidents and situations, and is underpinned by relevant theory. This course is formally assessed and successful participants will receive a Certificate valid for 3 years.

MiDAS Training

The Minibus Drivers Awareness Scheme is based upon best practice and designed to help improve minibus safety, as well as enhance passenger service and comfort. Pembrokeshire Association of Community Transport Organisations (PACTO) offer MiDAS training (theory and practical) for £35, which includes a manual and certificate. Refresher training is also available for those whose certificates have expired (certificates valid for 4 years). Training sessions are held around the County according to demand. To accommodate applicants who also work full time, training can be tailored to individual needs. MiDAS training is available for Minibuses, Cars and MPV's. Minibus Emergency Evacuation Training and Passenger Assistants Training can all now be arranged by PACTO

Festivals and Events Training - PLANED

PLANED, Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise and Development, run two training courses for people involved and interested in festivals and events across Pembrokeshire. Steward Training , tailored for the volunteers who give up their time to act as stewards at events, includes roles and responsibilities of stewards, health and safety, and traffic and crowd management. The course consists of two two-hour sessions over two weeks and  can be tailored to specific groups of volunteers, for example agricultural shows, music festivals etc.

The Festivals and Events training course for organisers of community festivals & events consists of four two-hour sessions over four consecutive weeks and includes topics such as risk assessment, event planning, funding, licensing and publicity, with input from Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services(PAVS), the licensing section of Pembrokeshire County Council, and Dyfed-Powys Police. Each session is led by an expert in their field and participants receive a copy of PLANED's handbook "Organising Community Events and Festivals".
