Heritage Lottery Fund

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) uses money from the National Lottery to support a wide range of projects involving the local, regional and national heritage of the United Kingdom . The National Lottery was set up by Parliament in 1993. It raises money for a range of good causes that benefit communities across the UK . From every £1 spent on a Lottery ticket, 28 pence goes directly to the good causes of arts, charities, heritage, projects to celebrate the new Millennium, sports, health, education and the environment. From every £1, 4.66 pence is given to heritage projects.

The HLF's strategic plan, Broadening the Horizons of Heritage (published May 2002), sets out the Fund's priorities for heritage projects for the period 1 April 2002 - 31 March 2007.

To qualify for a Heritage Grant, projects should:

-   conserve and enhance the diverse heritage of the UK

encourage more people to be involved in their heritage or both;

All projects must also:

-   make sure that everyone can learn about, have access to and enjoy their heritage.

'Heritage' is defined as many different things that have been, and can be, passed on from one generation to another. Among these are:
-   historic buildings;
-   records and collections held in museums, archives and special libraries, or photographic collections;
-   oral history;
-   language heritage projects;
the countryside and habitats and 'priority species' listed in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan;
-   designed landscapes;

-   objects and sites that are linked to industrial, maritime and transport history.
